Candlewicking and Roses 9 is the nineth design in our collection of Candlewicking and Rose blocks. The quilt will be called Josephine, in memory of Empress Josephine Bonaparte, whose love of roses was such that she collected as many varieties as possible and had the Belgian artist, Pierre-Joseph Redoute, paint them at her garden in the Chateau de la Malmaison.
-
All of the roses in this collection were inspired by the prints in Les Roses, by Pierre-Joseph Redoute. He was the official court artist of Queen Marie Antoinette and later of Empress Josephine, wife of Napoleon Bonaparte. Josephine was an ardent collector of roses and Redoute's most important and recognized work is his paintings of the roses from the garden at the Chateau de la Malmaison.
-
Candlewicking is an embroidery technique where a combination of knots and backstitches were applied to white or cream colored fabric. The name originates from the American West, where women who were unable to get embroidery threads, used the thread intended for candle wicks to do their embroidery.
-
We have created an elegant candlewick collection based on a diagonal grid with a lovely thick chain stitch and candlewick knots, overlaid with beautiful roses.
-
These Candlewick designs are very versatile and can be used as embroidery on lots of items.
-
They would be lovely on table linen, bed runners, quilts and bags.
-
